WMU Class of 2017: China Graduations

On 26 and 27 August, graduation ceremonies were held in Shanghai and Dalian for the two graduating Classes with a total of 54 students. This brings the number of students graduating at the WMU China-based campuses to 876 over the past 12 years.

Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of WMU, conferred the degrees on the graduates. She urged the graduating classes to continue striving for excellence and drew their attention to World Maritime Day on 28 September with its theme - “Connecting Ships, Ports and People”. She emphasized the importance of maritime transport as the backbone of international trade and the role the graduates are expected to play in achieving the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as well as in achieving safe, secure, efficient, and environmentally sustainable marine transport and operations worldwide, the fundamental objective of the IMO and its member States.

MSEM Class of 2016 Graduation, Dalian

The 2017 graduation ceremony of WMU’s MSc Programme in Maritime Safety and Environmental Management (MSEM) took place in Dalian, China on 26 August. In total, 35 students from China graduated.

In addition to Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of WMU, in attendance were Professor Shuo Ma, Vice President (International) of WMU and the Director of the MSEM programme, Dr. Sun Yuqing, President of DMU, Dr. Liu Zhengjiang and Professor Zhao Youtao, Vice Presidents of DMU, and many DMU faculty involved in delivery of the MSEM programme. Family members and friends of the graduates, a number of representatives of the nominating authorities, and the students of the MSEM 2017 class also were in attendance. Mr. Yu Yunfei received the Chancellor’s Medal for Academic Excellence. Mr. Li Xiaoyu, Mr. Lyu Meng, Mr. Shi Xiaolei, Mr. Yan Hecheng and Yu Yufei received Best Research Paper awards. Mr.Jiang Chao received the award of “MSEM Spirit”, which is the equivalent to WMU’s Srivastava Award.

The MSEM programme commenced in 2005 and is offered in cooperation with Dalian Maritime University. To date, 478 graduates have completed the MSEM programme.

ITL Class of 2016 Graduation, Shanghai

The 2017 graduation ceremony of WMU’s MSc Programme in International Transport and Logistics (ITL) took place in Shanghai, China on 27 August. In total there were 18 graduates representing China and Ghana.

In addition to Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of WMU, in attendance were Professor Shuo Ma, Vice President (International) of WMU, and representing SMU Dr. Jin Yongxing, Chairman of the SMU Council, Professor Huang Yufang, President of SMU, Professor Shi Xin, Vice President and several SMU faculty members involved in delivery of the ITL programme. Family members and friends of the graduates, a number of representatives of the nominating authorities, and the students of the ITL 2018 class were also in attendance. Ms. Lu Jieling received the Chancellor's Medal for Academic Excellence and Ms. Li Tianling, Ms. Zhu Qiuyi and Ms. Lu Jieling received received Best Research Paper awards.

The ITL programme commenced in 2005 and is offered in cooperation with Shanghai Maritime University. To date, 398 graduates have completed the ITL programme.
