Biography

Dr  Frank van der Meulen has more than 30 years of experience in multidisciplinary research and management of coastal lowlands in various parts of the world. He is senior advisor at Deltares and at UNESCO-IHE and is Associate Professor of ICZM/Integrated Coastal Zone Management, working on coastal ecosystems, coastal management, coastal adaptation and climate change. He has a background in ecology and worked for many years at the University of Amsterdam on (coastal) landscape ecology and landscape management. Besides his university research work he has over 10 years of experience in policy and management, working at the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management (National Institute for Coastal and Marine Management) as manager of the International Coastal Zone Management Centre.
Dr van der Meulen's main fields of experience are: coastal systems; integrated coastal management; (landscape) ecology; water management and climate change; environment and land(use): policy, planning and management; physical geography; remote sensing and monitoring of land-use changes; patterns and processes in ecosystems; degradation and restoration of ecosystems and landscapes; nature conservation; surveying and mapping; University teaching; coaching of MSc- and PhD-students.
His publications include over 200 articles, mainly in international scientific journals and books; besides many technical reports, mainly to public and private management authorities and Government Institutions.  He has been editor of several special issues of (inter)national journals. He was founder and, for ten years, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Coastal Conservation. He is member of the editorial board of the Journal of Coastal Research and member of the CERF/Coastal Education and Research Foundation. In The Netherlands, he is on the advisory board of Dutch dune management authorities.
The present field of work is in integrated water management (river basin) and coastal management; water and climate change (vulnerability assessment and coastal adaptation); policy and advice; low lying, vulnerable coastal environments (deltas, dunes, estuaries, wetlands); (post)graduate training and education.
He retired in April 2013 and now owns his own international consultancy firm: Frank van der Meulen Consultancy, Coastal environment and management; research, training and advise.
